TRIAD: Tactical Readiness Instruction, Authoring, and Delivery

Funder:
Naval Air Warfare Center - Training System Division
Description:
TRIAD is a program of R&D designed to investigate and improve the
way
technical and tactical information is communicated througout the US Navy fleet.
This software system provides a 'proof of concept' for knowledge object technology
applied in an ADDL (Advanced Distributed Distance Learning) environment.
In particular, tactical documents known as TACMEMOs, serve as the proving ground
for
the notions developed here.
TRIAD has been conceputalized as a contemporary Electronic Performance
Support
System (EPSS) and as such is characterized by three primary attributes:
- it's query driven
- it's smart
- it's supportivie
TRIAD uses a query or 'interview' to extract
expertise from tacticians in order to describe the tactic and to develop related
training support
and briefing materials. TRIAD is 'smart' because it utilizes efficient
data managment,
authoring, and presentation techniques. Finally, TRIAD is supportive
because it
provides scaffolds for task-specific guidance during all phases of authoring.
Each of these attributes has been operationalized within TRIAD and are
based upon
contemporary research in learning and cognition, computer sicence, and research
on
structured writing.
